Nintendo has announced the Switch 2, the successor to the Nintendo Switch system, planned for launch in 2025.
Nintendo Switch 2 plays Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games, as well as both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo Switch Online members can continue using the service on Nintendo Switch 2.
The new console has a similar physical look to the current Switch. The Joy-Con controllers will once again be detachable on the sides of the console, though this time as a snap-on rather than a slide-in function. The dock for the Switch 2 has a more rounded design.
A trailer was also released that offers a look at the hardware of the console.
Additional details on the new console will be revealed at the Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 on Wednesday, April 2 2025. Nintendo will also hold Nintendo Switch 2 Experience events, where consumers can go hands-on with the device, in select major cities around the world.
The current Nintendo Switch launched back in 2017. Released in the middle of the eighth generation of home consoles, the Switch succeeded the Wii U and competed with Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4.
