Games are an absolute roller coaster with the portable device with some working perfectly and others being a walking disaster, generally those with poor optimization or too much action/detail on screen at any one time. Atomfall Steam Deck Performance Analysis
Right off the bat Steam Deck users should know, you will NOT have any problems launching Atomfall. Launching games can actually be one of the biggest issues for the Deck and usually indicates a less-than-stellar port. Atomfall hasn’t given any users such issues yet.
Visually you will have to make some allowances, the graphical consistency takes a beating with the game’s landscapes and will require some tweaking of settings to get right. Medium settings can generally stick to 40FPS with some consistency. Turning down shadows is the main life hack for Deck users and can make even the most congested, detailed areas stick to a consistent output.
Honestly, even with decent visuals that’s not likely to drain the battery which is the biggest surprise. Even a consistent 40 fps can run for about 3 hours on Deck. There’s also the chance to adjust to a 30FPS cap with lower settings that can extend the battery life even further but that 40FPS output is certainly a smoother experience.
In addition, there are no signs to me, and no other reports, of input lag or visual lag after adjusting the graphics. This game runs on the Deck pretty seamlessly all around which is a rare experience for Deck users, but it is appreciated to have a new survival crafter available to the console.
Atomfall looks like one of the best games of its ilk for the Steam Deck. Despite its open world, lush landscapes, and crafting capabilities it can run at 40FPS without killing the device’s battery and provides no issue to players when launching or with the in-game action.
