Cory Gasaway, Vice President of Game, Product and Player Experiences at Sony Interactive Entertainment, has offered some insight into the creation of the PS5 Welcome Hub, revealing that it was designed based on how often users completely turn off their consoles.
Speaking with Game File’s Stephen Totilo, Gasaway revealed that the user base of the PS5 is split almost equally between those who turn off their systems and owners that put it in Rest Mode.
We gained a lot of insights about how players interact with their PS5 system between play sessions. A small example is we had an internal hypothesis that far more people would put their console into rest mode than fully shut it down each time between their play sessions. As it turned out, it was actually about 50/50 between the two options for all our players. So, what that meant was for about 50% of our users, when they booted up, if they were in the US, they were landing on our ‘Explore’ page. Those outside the US would land on the page for the last game that they have played.

The Welcome Hub was introduced back in September 2024 alongside a new PS5 system software update, and allows players to customise widgets and digest basic info before kicking off a play session. Here’s a quick lowdown of some of its key features from Sony:
- You can customize the Welcome hub with widgets and backgrounds.
- Widgets display information like storage, battery levels, online friends, and more.
- Widgets can be added, removed, resized, and moved one by one. You can also choose from preset widget layouts based on your preferences.
